In signing this petition, you acknowledge the following,
I oppose Ben Metcalf Paving Inc.'s proposal to build and operate a
heated asphalt plant at the East Canaan location for the following
reasons:
1. Its geographic proximity to the watershed area which provides water to local residents.
2. Increased truck traffic, negatively impacting the residents of the area and endangering public safety.
3. Increased safety risks of those traveling on roads traveled by
associated trucks, adding safety risks to children and adults
walking/biking along these roads.
4. Increased dust and noise, as well as asphalt odors.
5. Concerns about increased risks of children and elders developing respiratory problems.
6. Unknown impact on private wells, natural resources, and surrounding wetlands.
7. Negative impacts on quality of life in the Town of North Canaan.
8. Predicted property value decreases (up to 30%).
9. The negative perception of being the "Town with the Asphalt Plant", which would impact town growth.
Additionally: This proposed plant is NOT the same use
as the Metcalf current operation of producing "cold patch" asphalt. This
proposed plant is not an allowed use under the Town of North Canaan's
Zoning Bylaws.
